A restored Chicago Council of Gold Star Mothers memorial was unveiled at the Dan Ryan Visitor Center at the northeast corner of 87th Street and Western Avenue on Nov. 8, with hundreds of people in attendance. Local residents Tim Noonan and Modie Lavin led the effort to save the monument, which honors World War I soldiers but had fallen into disrepair at the southeast corner of 87th and Western. Several Gold Star mothers attended the ceremony, including Nancy Ebbers, of Oak Lawn, and Sheila Tracy, of Palestine, Ill. (left). The rededication began at 11 a.m. and was held three days before Armistice Day/Veterans Day on Nov. 11. World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 100 years ago.
